| | വിശാലമായ പാടശേഖരങ്ങള് നിറഞ്ഞതും അത്യന്തം മനോഹരവും എല്ലാത്തിനും ഉപരി നീര്വിളാകം എന്ന അര്ത്ഥവത്തായ പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ ഗ്രാമം സ്ഥിതി ചെയുന്നത് ആറന്മുളക്കും ചെങ്ങന്നൂരിനും മദ്ധ്യേ ആണ്. ഈശ്വരന് അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം വാരിച്ചൊരിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന്റെ അത്രയും കാണുവാന് മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ഗ്രാമം വേറെ ഉണ്ടോ എന്ന് തന്നെ സംശയം. പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ചെങ്ങന്നൂരില് നിന്നു അഞ്ച് കിലോമീറ്ററും, കിഴക്ക് ആറന്മുളയില് നിന്നും ഏഴ് കിലോമീറ്ററും അകലെയായി ഈ ഗ്രാമം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ആറന്മുള പഞ്ചായത്തിന്റെയും, പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയുടെയും ഭാഗമാണ് ഈ ഗ്രാമം. ഇന്ഡ്യയുടെ ഏറ്റവും തെക്കു ഭാഗത്തയി കേരളം എന്ന സംസ്ഥാനത്തില് ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയുടെയും, പത്തനംതിട്ട ജില്ലയുടെയും അതിര്ത്തിയില് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നതാണ് മറ്റൊരു ഭുമിശാസ്ത്രപരമായ പ്രത്യേകത. ഈ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ അതിര്ത്തികള് - പടിഞ്ഞാറ് പുത്തങ്കാവു - വടക്ക് ആറാട്ടുപുഴ - വടക്ക് കിഴക്ക് മാലക്കര - കിഴക്ക് കുറിച്ചിമുട്ടം - തെക്കു എഴിക്കാട് - തെക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറ് പിരളശ്ശേരി. | Neervilakom church  Neervilakom church | ||
| View from Vanchimoodu Junction  View from Vanchimoodu Junction | Centuries before, the area now known as Neervilakom was a part of dense and impenetrable tropical forest. The inhabitants of this forest being ferocious wild animals like tigers elephants etc, people were afraid to step into wild wood. Once it happened that, a tribal woman who was in search of food and honey, accidentally stepped into the denseness of this forest. The sickle which she had with her for collecting stuffs from the forest became blunt after prolonged use. In order to sharpen the knife she rubbed it against the face of a rock. To her surprise it happened that, blood began to gush out of the rock as if from a human body cut with a knife. Stricken by terror she fled out of the scene to a near by Brahmin Illam. On describing what she experienced in the forest, the thantri went along with the woman to the scene. Discerning the presence of Lord Shiva in that rock, the Thantri made arrangements for the 'Poojas' to be offered to the Lord. | |||
| നുറ്റാണ്ടുകള്ക്ക് മുന്പ് നീര്വിളാകം എന്ന് ഇപ്പോള് അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഗ്രാമം നിബിഡവനം ആയിരുന്നു. പുലി, ആന തുടങ്ങിയ വന്യമൃഗങ്ങള് അതിവസിച്ചിരുന്ന നിബിഡവനം. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങളുടെ ആധിക്യം കൊണ്ടും വനത്തിന്റെ നിബിഡത കൊണ്ടും ആളുകള് ഇവിടേക്ക് വാരാന് ഭയപെട്ടിരുന്നു. ഒരിക്കല് വിറക് ശേഖരികുകയായിരുന്ന ഒരു പുലയ യുവതി വളരെ യദ്രിച്ചികമായി വനത്തിനുള്ളില് കയറാന് ഇടയായി. വനത്തിന്റെ ഭീഗരതയെക്കുറിച്ച് അറിയാന് പാടില്ലായിരുന്ന യുവതി തേന് ശേഖരിച്ചും, വിറക് ശേഖരിച്ചും കുടുതല് നിബിഡതയിലേക്ക് കടക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. നിരന്തരമായ വിറകു ശേഖരണം മുലം മുര്ച്ചപോയ കത്തി മുര്ച്ച കൂട്ടുവാനായി അടുത്തുള്ള പാറക്കല്ലില് ഉരക്കവേ യുവതിയെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് അത് സംഭവിച്ചു. ഉരച്ച കല്ലില്നിന്നു മനുഷ്യ ശരീരത്തില് നിന്നെന്നപോലെ രക്തം വാര്ന്നോഴുകാന് തുടങ്ങി. ഭയപ്പെട്ട യുവതി അവിടെനിന്നും ഓടി അടുത്തുള്ള ബ്രാമിണ ഇല്ലത്തില് എത്തി എന്നിട്ട് താന് കണ്ട അത്ഭുത ദൃശ്യം ഇല്ലത്തെ തന്ത്രിമുഖ്യനെ അറിയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. യുവതിയോടൊപ്പം സംഭവം നടന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെത്തിയ തന്ത്രിമുഖ്യന് ശിലയില് ശിവ സാന്നിധ്യംതിരിച്ചറിയുകയും പൂജക്കുള്ള ഏര്പ്പാടുകള് ചെയ്കയും ഉണ്ടായി. | View from Ezhikkadu Bridge  View from Ezhikkadu Bridge | |||

The descendants of the nair family, who came from Nilakkal, came to be known as the Nilakkal Kudumbam. So the first human inhabitants of Neervilakom are the Nilakkal family. Later when the Cheravamsas ruled Travancore, more people moved in to Neervilakam appreciating the fertility of this land. This place came to be known as "Neeru vilanga idam" as a recognition to the fertility of the land. The name "Neeru vilanga idam" got abridged year after year to evolve as "Neervilakam". Another myth says that, since this place has got many rice fields in its periphery which are always filled with water, it came to be known as Neervilakam which literally means, surrounded by water. Experts believe the first to be true as "vilakam" etymologically has got a Tamil tinge to it. | |||
| വിവരം അറിഞ്ഞ നിലക്കല് ദേശത്തെ നായര് പ്രമാണി പവിത്രമായ ഈ സ്ഥലം സന്ദര്ശിക്കുകയും ഉചിതമായ നിലയില് ദേവന് ക്ഷേത്രം നിര്മ്മിക്കുവാന് തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. നിലക്കല് ദേശത്തുനിന്നും എത്തിയ നായര് പ്രമാണിയുടെ പരമ്പരയില്പെട്ടവര് നിലക്കല് കുടുംബക്കാര് എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. നിലക്കല് കുടുംബക്കാര് ആണ് നീര്വിളാകത്തിലെ ചരിത്രം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ആദ്യത്തെ താമസക്കാര്. ക്ഷേത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടാണ് നീര്വിളാകത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. പിന്നീട് തിരുവിതാംകുര് ദേശം ചേര രാജവംശം ഭരിക്കുമ്പോള് നീര്വിളാകത്തിലേക്ക് കുടുതല് കുടിയേറ്റം ഉണ്ടാകാന് ഇടയായി. നീര്വിളാകം എന്ന പേര് ഈ സമയത്ത് വീണുകിട്ടിയതാണെന്ന് പൊതുവെ വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നീര്വിളാകം എന്ന പേരിനെ പലരും പലരീതിയില് വ്യാഖ്യാനിക്കുന്നു. അതില് ഒന്നു ഇപ്പ്രകാരമാണ് - നീര്വിളാകത്തിനു ചുറ്റും നുറുകണക്കിന് ഏക്കര് പാടശേഖരങ്ങള് ഉണ്ടെന്നു സുചിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നല്ലോ. വര്ഷത്തില് എതാണ്ട് പകുതി മാസങ്ങളിലും ഈ പാടശേഖരങ്ങള് വെള്ളം നിറഞ്ഞു കിടക്കുകയായിരിക്കും. അങ്ങനെ വെള്ളത്താല് (നീരാല്) ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന (വളയപ്പെട്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന) സ്ഥലം എന്ന കാരണത്താല് നീര്വിളാകം എന്നു പേര് കിട്ടി എന്ന് ചിലര് വാദിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റൊരു കഥ ഇപ്പ്രകാരമാണ് - ഇതു തമിഴ് സംസ്കാരവുമായി ചേര്ത്ത് വായിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു കഥയാണ്. ചേരവംശവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് രുപംകൊണ്ട നാട് എന്നനിലയില് ഇനിപറയുന്നതാണ് ശരിയായ ചരിത്രം എന്നു പൊതുവെ വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കാരണം ചേരവംശവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പല ദേശങ്ങള്ക്കും "വിളാകം" എന്ന അവസാന ഭാഗതോടുകുടിയ പേരുകള് കേരളത്തിന്റെ പലഭാഗത്തും കാണാന് കഴിയുന്നതാണ്. നീര്വിളാകത്തിനു തമിഴില് അര്ത്ഥം ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് - നീര് കുരുത്ത ഇടം - അതായത് ഫലപുഷ്ടമായ സ്ഥലം എന്നു അര്ത്ഥം. ഈ ഇരുപത്തൊന്നാം നുറ്റാണ്ടില് പോലും കാര്ഷിക വിളകളാല് സമ്പുഷ്ടമായ നീര്വിളാകം തികച്ചും " നീര് കുരുത്ത ഇടം " ആണെന്നതില് ആര്ക്കും സംശയം ഉണ്ടാവാന് ഇടയില്ല. | Manakkal Stream  Manakkal Stream View from Manakkal Stream  View from Manakkal Stream | |||

| ഒരു തമാശ എന്ന പോലേ ചെറുപ്പക്കാര് പറയുന്ന ഒരു രസകരമായ കഥയും നീര്വിളാകം എന്ന പേരിനെ പറ്റി നിലവിലുണ്ട്. മധ്യതിരുവിതാംകുറില് പ്രേത്യേകിച്ചു നീര്വിളാകത്തില് ധാരാളം കാണുന്ന ഒരുതരം ഉറുമ്പുണ്ട്. "നീര്" എന്നു അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഇത്തരം ഉറുമ്പുകള് ധാരാളം ഇവിടെ ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ടാണ് നീര്വിളാകം എന്ന പേര് വന്നത് എന്നു അവര് പറയുന്നു. പക്ഷെ ഈ കഥ രസകരമായ ഒരു നുണകഥയായി കണ്ടാല് മതിയാവും. | View from Malakkara  View from Malakkara | |||

Prominent among them were Melemeppurathu (Modiyil) and Kalechumodiyil families. They expanded and account to 5% of the Neervilakam population. Till recent days Puthencavu church and Aarattupuzha church were the only houses of worship for them. Now, the neervilakom orthodox church, which was completed in 1995 remains as the main center for worship for Christians. The fact that Hindus and Christians worked in harmony to raise this holy structure, can be pointed as a prime example of the religious unity that exits here. All men irrespective of their religion, caste and creed are welcome to perform Aradhana and Vazhipadu at the Sree Ayappa temple. And this adds to the blessedness of this place. | |||
| 19ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റേ ആദ്യത്തോടുകൂടി നീര്വിളാകത്തിലേക്കു ചില ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി കുടുംബങ്ങള് കുടിയേറുകയുണ്ടായി. അതില് നീര്വിളാകത്തില് ഇന്നും പ്രസിദ്ധമായ മേലേമേപ്പുറത്തു കുടുംബം, കാളേച്ചുമോടിയില് കുടുംബം എന്നിവയും ഉള്പ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്നു അവര് നീര്വിളാകത്തിന്റേ ഏതാണ്ട് 5% ഓളം ജനസംഖ്യയേ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്നു. അടുത്ത കാലം വരെ നീര്വിളാകത്തിലേ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനി കുടുംബങ്ങള് ആറാട്ടുപുഴയിലും പുത്തെങ്കാവിലും ഉള്ള പള്ളികളേ ആയിരുന്നു ആരാധനക്കായി ആശ്രയിച്ചിരുന്നതു. എന്നാല് 1995ല് പണികഴിപ്പിച്ച നീര്വിളാകം ഓര്ത്തഡോക്സ് പള്ളി അവരുടെ ചിരകാല അഭിലാഷത്തിനു വീരാമം ഇട്ടു. ഈ പള്ളി പണിയാന് മതവും ജാതിയും മറന്നു എല്ലാ മെഖലകളിലും ഉള്ള ജനങ്ങള് പങ്കെടുത്തതു കൊണ്ടു ഇതു നീര്വിളാകത്തിന്റെ മതനിരപേക്ഷതയുടേയും, സാഹോദര്യത്തിന്റേയും മകുടോദാഹരണമായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. ഇതിനു പുറമേ ജാതിക്കും മതത്തിനും അതീതമായി എല്ലാ ജനങ്ങളും നീര്വിളാകം ക്ഷേത്രത്തില് ആരാധനയും, വഴിപാടും നടത്താറുണ്ട്. ജനങ്ങളുടേ ഇത്തരം നിലപാടുകളാണു ഈ നാടിനേ കൂടുതല് മഹത്തരമാക്കുന്നതു. | An Evening from Punnattakkunnu  An Evening from Punnattakkunnu | |||

| ഇവിടെ നിന്നു ഏതാണ്ട് 1.5 കിലോമീറ്ററോളം വടക്കു മാറി പവിത്രമായ പമ്പാ നദി ഒഴുകുന്നു. പമ്പാ നദിയിലേക്കു ഒഴുകി എത്തുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയ അരുവി നീര്വിളാകത്തിനു അടുത്ത ഗ്രാമങ്ങളുമായി അതിര്ത്തി തിരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ അരുവി അടുത്ത ഗ്രാമമായ കോട്ടയില് നിന്നാണു ഉത്ഭവിക്കുന്നതു എങ്കിലും അതിന്റേ ഏറിയപങ്കും ജലശ്രോതസ്സും ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുന്നതു നീര്വിളാകം ഗ്രാമവാസികള് ആണു. കൊടും വേനലില് പോലും വറ്റാതെ ഒഴുകുന്ന ഈ അരുവി നീര്വിളാകത്തിനു അതിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തമായ പച്ചപ്പും, ഭംഗിയും എപ്പോഴും നിലനിര്ത്താന് സഹായിക്കുന്നു. | View from Malankaavu  View from Malankaavu | |||

All trophies won by Tagore sports club are exhibited in the library. This enthusiasm and dedication has won Neervilakom a good name in Sports among the neighboring villages. He was 106 when he passed away in 2006.It may be surprising for others to learn that 95 percent of the people of Neervilakom were students of Mr: Narayana pillai, from 8 year old kid to 80 year old grand parents. This shows how much this great man has influenced the culture of this village. He was hard working and possessed the virtues that could bring in the respect of the public. | |||

The cash crops and food crops produced here are sufficient to meet the majority of the needs of the people. Rubber is another main product of Neervilakom. Although by official statistics some people are below the poverty line, in fact all are able to make both ends meet. The people are so helpful that they will never let others to starve when they are not. Neighbours use to share whatever they have cooked and people live in such harmony that one never feels ashamed in asking neighbours for help. People consider it as their responsibility to help others and take pride in understanding and helping the needy. | |||
