Elephant kills mahout in Kuttanad

ALAPPUZHA: An elephant named Narayanan Kutty, owned by Nannoor Mahadeva Temple, Thiruvalla, killed its mahout at Onnamkara on the Alappuzha-Changanassery Road (A-C Road), near Pulinkunnu, in Kuttanad at 2.30 a.m.
The Pulinkunnu police identified the mahout as G. Sathyan, 31, Kizhakke Charuvil house, Neervilakam, Aranmula. The elephant, which is reported to have killed several persons in the past, was returning from Alappuzha to Thiruvalla.
The elephant was brought to Alappuzha to take part in the `pakalpooram' planned by the Alappuzha district administration as a part of the tourism festival here. The `pakalpooram,' which was to be held on December 30 afternoon, was called off following a hartal in protest against the killing of the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
The police said when the elephant reached Onnamkara, it pulled down its mahout who was seated atop and tore away one of his arms. The tusker then gored the mahout and trampled him to death. The other mahouts of the elephant fled the scene.
The tusker later proceeded to Perunna via A-C Road. The local people panicked as efforts by the police to tame the elephant proved futile.
The elephant was later shackled in Thiruvalla. Sathyan was the fourth mahout to be killed by the elephant, said Jayaraman Nair, temple devaswom secretary. Dr. Jacob attached to the Daya Elephant Squad, Kollam, said that the elephant had shown signs of musth.
